Nudge that bespectacled ape, that cunning old monkey, into its corner. In the Agrarian past all crops grew until levelled, the animals also, the farmers outliving these until they too got laid to rest. Then along came steam engines and mechanical marvels that could work tirelessly night and day, executing well their specified tasks and looking like they could outlive folk. Surrounded daily by detached monsters seemingly longer-living than themselves – well, I wonder how that transition to industrialization felt and what ideas it stirred up? In the strongest, a desire to deal as responsibly with their machines as with their men: in the weakest the urge to engineer human behaviour into a usable/abusable mechanism?
